A Familiar Sight Due To Unfamiliar Circumstances
Hickory Crawdads Stadium Opening Day
The image above is what is becoming a familiar sight on Opening Day for the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Since their inaugural season, 2005, the Hoppers have sent their starting pitcher to the mound 4 times to open the season. In 8 seasons, they are 4-4 of starting the season on Opening Day. That being said it is not uncommon around these parts to have a delay or postponement opening day. What is uncommon, in fact unprecedented, is being cancelled due to snow and sleet.

Today’s game in Hickory was set to be a great matchup. Scott Lyman, returning for his second year in Greensboro, was set to take the mound. This right hander will start out the season to improve on his 3 game win record and 6 losses. He threw 62 strikeouts out of 74 innings pitched. I’m very interested to see what kind of heat he can throw this year.

Greensboro Cuts The Power On West Virginia!!!
This was the scene outside the gates tonight. To those of you that know about this, I would like to know your thoughts, please comment below. To those that do not know, the Babe statue was stolen last July. For the full article, found at greensborosports.com click here. Tonight, the man that stole the statue was court ordered to stand outside the ballpark with a sign publicly apologizing for stealing the beloved mascot and statue. To some, it proved its point. To others, it was a joke. Comment below and let me know your thoughts.
Besides the media spectacle that was outside the gates, there was also a ballgame. A ballgame that would consist of a home run smash by James Wooster, lots of pitching errors (their’s and ours), and a huge rally in the eighth to eventually win the game for the Grasshoppers. The Hoppers would be down 6-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. To those that have been paying attention during this series, it seemed like the same story, different night. However, the Hoppers had another ending in mind for tonight. In a fairytale movie like fashion, In the bottom of the eighth, Wilfredo would single out to right field. Ryan McIntyre would then be walked, advancing Wilfredo to second. Then, Ryan Reiger would single to load the bases! Matt Smith would be intentionally walked, forcing a run to score! STILL NO OUTS, Brent Keys would get a strikeout. Austin Barnes would send a sacrifice fly out to the outfield, as Ryan McIntyre scores. For those not keeping track, the score was now 6-4. Only need two runs to tie. Those two runs would come in next as John Shultz would send a double out to right field bringing in the tying two runs. The man of the night was none other than JOSH ADAMS! Josh Adams would step up to the plate, with two strikes and two outs, he would double again bringing John Shultz home. For a rally finish of 9-6. Hoppers prevent the series sweep as they pull the cord on the West Virginia Power.
Starting on the mound tonight was Charlie Lowell. He threw 5 innings, allowed 7 hits, 5 runs, and 1 home run. With no strikeouts. Brad Mincey would come in and relieve him throwing 2 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run. He would sit down as Kevin Cravey would come to the plate to close the night. Kevin would throw the final 2 innings, allowing no hits and the lonely strikeout of the night.
With the Hoppers victory tonight, they improve to 15-19. The Hoppers are also 5 games behind first place. Be sure to click for the full recap and box score. Friday The 13th Proves Too Scary For Hagerstown; Hoppers win 7-2
The theme tonight was Halloween night. Being that it was Friday the 13th and the stadium is located right off Elm Street it had all the makings for a cheesy horror flick. And in some ways it was rather cheesy. You could catch pirates, clowns, pimps, and even waldo (If you could find him…) walking around and taking in the game. The names on the scoreboard were even put to a cool halloween background .
Jim Scott, pictured above, was definitely in rare form today. He was dressed as Superfly or quite simply, a pimp.
Looks like Spaz found Waldo!
Austin Brice was the starting pitcher on the mound tonight. He would throw 5 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 5 strikeouts. He would be relieved by Kevin Cravey who pitched one inning and allowed 1 hit. Daniel Oliver would then come in to pitch 2 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 strikeouts. Next up would walk Greg Nappo who would throw 1 inning and three straight strikeouts for a combined total of 10 strikeouts. That’s a lot of K’s on the board for Don Moore and his crew at the “JETS PIZZA K ZONE”.
The game was tied at zero until the bottom of the fourth inning when an inning full of errors happened. The Hoppers would come in to score 6 runs that inning. Batters to cross the plate were Aaron Senne, Ryan Reiger, James Wooster, Tony Caldwell, Austin Nola, and Terrence Dayleg.
With all the costumes and scary figures around tonight I guess Friday the 13th was just too scary for Hagerstown. Hagerstown would never lead in this one. Hoppers take the win easily 7-2. With tonights win the Hoppers move to 8-14 in the second half and only 6 games back! The Hoppers are back in action tomorrow night facing the Kannapolis Intimidators. And as always… IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A HOPPER!!

Good News/Bad News as Suns Down Hoppers Tonight
When I left the house tonight, I honestly thought the game would be rained out, maybe even a delay or two. However, not even a drop of rain fell during the three hour affair in Greensboro. The weather remained dreary and humid with an on field temperature of 86 degrees.
You could say tonights game was a GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS deal.
Good News: Rand Smith had three hits on five at bats. Two which occurred in both the eighth and ninth inning while trying to start a rally.
Bad News: Josh Adams, Ryan Goetz, and James Wooster were each held to only one hit at five at bats
Good News: Shortstop Terrence Dayleg and relief pitcher Kevin Cravey will be activated back to the roster. Dayleg is the defensive anchor of the infield and Cravey will bolster the bullpen.
Bad News: To make room, reliever and 2011 SAL Championship pitcher, Chris Shafer will rejoin Jupiter and infielder Yeison Hernandez will return to Jamestown.
Good News: Brent Keys and Austin Barnes are only looking at a matter of days till they will be activated from the DL.
Bad News: With tonights loss, the Hoppers dropped to 6-13 and are currently 8 games behind the first place Hickory Crawdads
Bill Hass had the privilege of speaking to Manager Dave Berg tonight and captured Berg’s opinion in the latest Bill On Baseball entry:
“It will be a big difference,” manager David Berg said of getting players back. “The first half of the season we were healthy. I don’t know if we had a position player on the DL. The second half has not been kind to us in that regard. Now we’re adding the guys who got us to where we were.”
And with those additions back to the roster and the acquisition of Austin Nola I definitely think we’ll be back to where we were in no time at all! So with all that said, IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A HOPPER!

Crawdads Prove To Be Too Hot For The Hoppers
With an on field temperature of 102 degrees at the first pitch, to say it was hot was an understatement. Spaz always does a seat upgrade during every game promoting LAZY-BOY recliners. He has dubbed this “the best seats in the house”. These “best seats” consist of four recliners at the top of the seating bowl behind home plate. Tonight, the “best seats in the house” clearly was out in the SUNBRELLA zone located in right field. Sitting there underneath umbrellas with an ice cold Mountain Dew, a great friend, and baseball. What’s better than that? Yeah. A win would’ve capped it off, but when you have secured the northern division playoff spot, I’m okay with just enjoying games for the sake of enjoying them.
Tonights game was enjoyable from a Hoppers standpoint as well. I got to witness Austin Barnes slam his 4th home run tonight! Which I love seeing guys like that perform well. Aaron Senne and Austin Barnes hit homers tonight. Both great guys doing great things in the diamond. Tonight was Aaron’s 3rd homer in four nights. That is quite the accomplishment! Hoppers were facing the Hickory Crawdads, which coming into tonight were 7-2 in the second half, and are currently in first place. Needless to say, the heat wasn’t the only struggle our boys were going to have to overcome.
Pitchers tonight were the newly acquired Scott Lyman, who pitched 5.2 innings, allowed 8 hits and four strikeouts. Greg Nappo threw 1.1 innings, allowed 3 hits and 4 strikeouts. Nappo would be relieved by Jose Rodreguez would pitch 1 inning, allowing 1 hit and 1 strikeout. Brad Mincy then came up to finish off the night, allowing 2 hits and no strikeouts.
The big hitters of the night were, Aaron Senne with a two run homer to right field. Austin Barnes slamming his homer in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Senne went 3-4 tonight and Austin Barnes went 4-1, with his home run being his lonely hit on the night. Ryan Goetz also went 3-1 on the night. Hoppers fell to the Crawdads to a score of 11-4. With this loss the Hoppers drop to 4-5 in the second half standings and currently three games back. Come and check out your Hoppers tomorrow for another scorcher. Temperature tomorrow is predicted to be around 105. Maybe, it’ll be just hot enough to steam some Crawdads. As always, this is Jordan Stowe, and IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A HOPPER!

Stars, Stripes, and Strikes!
Tonight was Military appreciation night, and what a night it was! With an on the field temperature of 73 degrees and wind slightly blowing, it made a great night for baseball. The pitchers on the mound tonight were Jose Urena and Austin Brice. They combined for an amazing 14 strikeouts!!! It was incredible to see that duo sling the ball. The score was tied at zero going into the 4th when Urena had two walks and then Lakewood would clear the bases before the inning was over making it 4-0. Josh Adams steps up to the plate in the bottom of the 4th and launches a home run to the moon before it landed somewhere outside of Winston Salem. It was a monster home run! Lakewood would not score the rest of the game. The bottom of the ninth, Josh Adams would hit a double putting him at second base. James Wooster steps up to the plate and launches a home run right off the score board in center field. Making the score 4-3. Terrence Dayleg would single, making the tying run on base, winning run at the plate. Wilfredo Gimenez (who’s been slumping bad this year) grounds a ball straight to second base, Dayleg is tagged out at second then to first, making it a double play to end the game. The Greensboro Grasshoppers snapped their 16 game home winning streak tonight to the Lakewood Blueclaws. With this loss they are 30-11 on the season, and currently still 6 games ahead of second place. So this loss really didn’t matter, in the scheme of things, lets just not make it a habit! Tonight was pretty close to a sell out and with tomorrows giveaway, its gonna be another crowd and another GREAT DAY TO BE A HOPPER!

Even The Pregame Showers Couldn’t Cool Off The Hoppers!
Tonight was a fun night at the ballpark. Shanna, my wife, joined me tonight. For those of you that don’t know me personally, I get two season tickets every year and I am usually the only one using the tickets. Shanna mainly works at night and quite frankly doesn’t care for baseball. We decided to make tonight a date night of sorts. Needless to say, we met up with some friends up there and sat in the SUNBRELLA zone, out in the outfield for most of the game. It provides a different view on the game. I’m used to being up close in personal where all the action is. My seats are front row, on the first base line, beside the away dugout. So sitting in outfield provides a much better take on the game.
One thing I love as a photographer, is taking pictures of the stadium during different times of the day. The sunsets over the stadium are just awesome! Tonights was no different.
As I stated in the title and as I’ve stated many times this season already, the Hoppers are on fire! And I don’t see them cooling off anytime soon! With Adam Conley and Jose Fernandez pitching like they are, and Adams, Barnes, Wooster, and Keys hitting the way they are we are definitely on the right track to secure the first half. That sure would be nice. Jose Fernandez started off the night by throwing 6 strikeouts in the first two innings and had a total strikeout count of 8. Things were definitely heating up on the mound tonight. James Wooster had an incredible diving catch late in the 7th inning and stepped right up and slammed a home run off the score board. Hoppers win again by a score of 3-2 against the West Virginia Power! The win tonight improves the Hoppers to 20-8 and of those 28 games the crowd in Greensboro has only seen two of those losses! Talk about home town support! Their last loss at home came back on April 11 against the Lakewood Blueclaws! And that is why, my friends, I continue to echo the sentiment heard around the ballpark, IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A HOPPER!

Hoppers Intimidate Intimidators (9/4/2011)
Today’s Greensboro Grasshoppers game against the Kannapolis Intimidators resulted in a Hoppers win (5-3), largely due to home runs by Mark Canha and Isaac Galloway. This also puts the Hoppers just a little closer to a playoff spot, or keeps them just a little farther out of being eliminated, depending on how you want to look at it. Since Hickory lost to Greenville tonight, that final playoff spot is still up for grabs between Greensboro and Kannapolis. The good news is that there are more scenarios that have Greensboro capturing the spot than there are having Kannapolis capturing it. The bad news is that it’s by no means a given that the Hoppers will take it.
Let’s see if I can boil down the scenarios correctly. Hickory is going to the playoffs since they won the first half of the season. They are also currently leading the second half of the season (by a measly half game over Kannapolis), so if they end up winning the second half, Greensboro will progress due to winning the wildcard race. Hickory needs to win tomorrow in order to win the 2nd half. If Hickory does not win tomorrow, either Greensboro or Kannapolis will win the second half, and that will be decided by whoever wins the Hoppers-Intimidators game tomorrow. Short version: Greensboro advances if either Greensboro or Hickory wins tomorrow night, Kannapolis advances if both Kannapolis wins and Hickory loses. Also, there’s a bunch of rain scheduled to start coming tomorrow. Who knows what that will do as far as games getting played, and what the baseball math will be as a result of that. I’m not even going to think about that (but I think if everything gets rained out, the Hoppers are going to the playoffs).
Obviously, the easiest way to keep from being confused is for Greensboro to go back to Kannapolis tomorrow, play a solid game, and secure a win. They can do that. They’ve already done that in three of the four games this series. It won’t be easy — Kannapolis is a great team, and I’m sure they’re going to take the field tomorrow determined to win. The good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise (literally), I’ll be down in Kannapolis again tomorrow to cheer the Hoppers on. If you can go down to help, you should — there has been a decent showing of Hoppers fans at all of the games so far, and I think the team appreciates the support.
So how did today’s game go down? For the most part, nicely. Starting for Greensboro was Alex Caldera. For Kannapolis, Matthew Heldenreich. Danny Black scored the first Hoppers run in the second inning, having reached base on a ground-rule double. He was subsequently batted in on a single by James Wooster. There were no more scoring plays on either side until the sixth inning, when the Hoppers put another two on the board. Mark Canha hit a two-run homer, driving in Marcell Ozuna, who had previously reached on a single. In the bottom of the sixth, Kannapolis left fielder Collin Kuhn scored after having reached on a double. Caldera was pitching a shutout to that point, and as soon as Kuhn scored, he was replaced by Brett Zawacki, who pitched the rest of the sixth and the complete seventh. In the top of the seventh, Isaac Galloway hit a two-run homer, bringing JT Realmuto in with him, who had reached on a single. After Galloway’s homer, Jake Wilson replaced Heldenreich on the mound and pitched the rest of the game for Kannapolis. In the bottom of the seventh, Kannapolis responded with two runs of their own: Ross Wilson and Marcus Semien. Grant Dayton replaced Zawacki for the Hoppers in the eighth and ninth, but no other runs were scored by either team.

It was an exciting, enjoyable ballgame. Even more so with the right team ending up victorious.
Visiting Kannapolis for Hoppers games is a real treat. As I already mentioned, there were a good deal of familiar faces with other Hoppers fans who came to support the team. The ballpark is generally more quiet than the Greensboro park, and almost everyone at the game seemed to be into the game. The Kannapolis staff is very friendly, even knowing that I’m pulling for their opponents. Today was even more of a treat because Kannapolis is celebrating “Fan Appreciation Weekend,” and as part of that celebration, most of the team was out signing autographs before the game. As a result, I got eleven autographs in the Kannapolis team set:
In addition to all the Intimidators autographs, I found Kyle Winters (thanks for pointing him out to me, Pete!) and got him to autograph a couple of 8.5×11 printouts of photos I took from yesterday’s game, where he got the win. I tried not to bother him too much on his “day off” in the stands, but I told him he looked great out there and he said he felt great, too. I’m psyched to add these photos to the small baseball museum I am establishing in an empty cube at my office. I’m definitely looking forward to watching Kyle’s career once he leaves the Hoppers.
Two things made scoring the game easier at Kannapolis than it is at Greensboro: 1) after every inning, the announcer recaps the runs/hits/errors/lob stats for the inning, and 2) between innings, there is still a scoreboard with the game statistics visible. Here’s how I had the game:
It’s an exciting time to be a Hoppers fan. I think this is the closest we’ve come to a playoff spot since we’ve been in the new stadium. Tomorrow’s going to be a tense day, watching the Hoppers play hard against Kannapolis and watching the scoreboard for the Hickory game. I just hope that when the sun goes down, the Hoppers are going to the playoffs.

Hoppers Extend Their Winning Streak (8/14/2011)
Yesterday’s Greensboro Grasshoppers win against the Augusta GreenJackets extends the Hoppers winning streak to six wins and inches the team that much closer to being in contention for a playoff spot at the end of the season. Check out the box score and game recap for all the official details.
Sunday afternoon day games mean no batting practice on the field, but I showed up early anyway to see what was going on. Several players from both teams were stretching and throwing, and if you look closely in the following picture, you can see the team chaplains from Baseball Chapel leading chapel service in the home team dugout. They’re the guys in the light blue shirts:
While waiting for the gates to open, I ran into the bus driver for the GreenJackets. Turns out he used to drive the bus for Greensboro, too. While I was chatting with him, we were joined by my buddies Patrick and his son Eli, who occasionally contributes photos for the blog here. The bus driver was telling us about the team’s trip down here from Lexington, riding with storms the whole time. They ended up getting into town about five in the morning. I joked that I hoped that meant they weren’t well-rested and our team would be able to take advantage of that. As it turns out, maybe that did play into our getting the win.
So how did the game go? In a word, weird. I don’t want to steal Bill Hass’ thunder from his latest blog post since you should be reading his blog, too, so here are the highlights he noted: an outfielder lost a glove attempting to catch a home run, four strikeouts in one inning, tripping for a balk, and turning a blown save into a win. I was worried about the game being a difficult one for several reasons. The Hoppers haven’t played against the GreenJackets yet this season and really didn’t know what to expect. (The Hoppers and GreenJackets are in different divisions in the league and don’t meet each other as much as teams in the same league do.) Looking at their stats, I knew the GreenJackets are good. They are very much in contention for the second half title in their division. The Hoppers were hot against Lakewood, but I wasn’t sure it was going to last. In our favor, we were starting Robert Morey, who threw a complete game shutout earlier in the season. The GreenJackets starting pitcher was one of their best, so I was ready for a tense pitcher’s dual to unfold. Instead, I saw six home runs (three on each side of the scorecard). Morey pitched for five and a third innings and was winning when he left the mound. He was replaced by Kenneth Toves, who only pitched for the final two-thirds of the sixth inning. In those two outs, he managed to blow the save on his first pitch when the GreenJackets batter homered off of him, tying the score at five. The Hoppers responded in the bottom of the sixth with four runs of their own, and even though Miguel Mejia took the mound in the seventh, since Toves was the pitcher of record when the Hoppers scored all those runs, he gets credited with the win. Mejia pitched for an inning and a third, being replaced by Grant Dayton in the eighth, who picked up the save. A dropped third strike in the ninth where the runner got on base allowed the weirdness that had Dayton record four strikeouts in that inning.

Offensively, I saw the most beautiful bunt I’ve ever seen. In the sixth, with runners on first and second, Ryan Fisher laid down a bunt that slowly trickled down the third baseline, going slow enough to become obvious that it wasn’t going to roll foul. The third baseman sprinted to the ball, but wasn’t able to get it in enough time to make the throw to first. Instead of sacrificing, like the intent was, Fisher found himself with a hit that put him on first and loaded the bases. All three of those base runners ended up scoring: Christian Yelich and Mark Canha when Danny Black singled two batters later, and Fisher when James Wooster singled after Black. The bottom of the sixth inning infused exactly the energy the Hoppers needed to finish strong. The GreenJackets managed one more run in the eighth. I completely blame that run on the Hoppers pitching. The batter singled, but advanced to second on a wild pitch, third on a balk, and home on another wild pitch. But it wasn’t enough to rally the GreenJackets to a win, and the Hoppers went back to the locker room victorious for the sixth straight game.

As has been my custom lately, as soon as I got in the park, I headed over to the third base tunnel (pictured above) to hang out for autographs. It was a successful venture, as I was able to get both GreenJackets players who are featured in the SAL All-Star pack to sign their cards. I also picked up Cody Clark’s autograph. He’s the strength and conditioning coach for the Hoppers. Additionally, I got Steve Kline to autograph a baseball. Kline is a former major-league relief pitcher and is now working as the pitching coach for the GreenJackets. Here are the autographs I got, including hitting coach Kevin Randall’s, whose autograph I got the previous day.
It was a great game, and one thing made it even more thrilling for me. Earlier in the week, I received a nice email from Bill Hass thanking me for linking to his blog. He mentioned that he’d try to give me a shout out on the radio when he was in the booth with Andy Durham on Sunday’s game. I had been listening to the radio broadcast off and on during the game, but that’s pretty hard to do at the ballpark, especially when all my awesome friends kept dropping by to say “hi” and watch some of the game with me. So I didn’t hear a shout-out during the game, but as soon as I got in my car and was listening to the post-game broadcast, they started talking about both Bill’s blog and my blog. It was really, really, really cool to hear them tell their listeners to go check out “Greg Cohoon’s Hoppers Fan blog” as well as the “Bill on Baseball” blog. I’ve gotten to know a bunch of people at the park over the past couple of years, but I’m not officially associated with the team. This is just a fan blog, written by an obsessed fan. So, seriously, if you’re not already reading Bill on Baseball as well as my blog, what is the matter with you? 
With the way things are going, the end of the season is going to look interesting for several teams jockeying for a playoff spot. At this point, the best thing for the Hoppers to do is keep winning and see where everything else falls out. I’ve got my fingers crossed.
